A Month of Jane: Storage Tips from My Closet

June is quickly approaching, but I'm in no hurry. Here on the Closet Blog, I'm declaring a month of JANE—a series from my own closet!

I love problem solving with new storage ideas, so my closet system is always a work in progress. This series will show you the tools I'm currently using to stay organized, and how I share the space with my husband. (Teaser: His side of the closet looks completely different from mine, but not in ways you might expect!)

Recently, I swapped out my scarves and sandals to stage my shopping zone for summer.

Over the winter, I stored my scarves in wire baskets at the bottom of my closet. My sandals, which occupy that space during summer, lived in a tidy storage box high on a shelf. Using convertible storage features helps me make the most of my custom closet year-round.

I found these simple storage boxes at The Container Store.

Because I keep my scarves folded and organized, it takes no time at all to pull out my sandals and fill the same storage box with neat stacks of scarves. The sandals go into the wire baskets, so everything fits just as it did before! I selected attractive storage boxes for this task, so I don't mind displaying them in my shoe rack and on top of my closet shelving.

If you're not moving off-season clothes to your garage cabinets, choose attractive storage boxes you can display on your shoe rack and closet shelving. I found these storage boxes at The Container Store.

To the right of my shoe rack, I store slacks, jeans, T-shirts and some long sleeves. Even casual clothes can look nice when they're stored well! This also illustrates my theory that no style of coat hanger can meet every storage need.

(Here are the four types of hangers I use in my closet.)

Felt hangers keep jeans and slacks pressed and organized. Plastic hangers are an easy way to store T-shirts and other casual clothes.
