Tip 1: Invest in a Breakup Basket

Dedicate one storage basket in your closet to clothes you don't quite love—and utilize it daily! Putting things in your breakup basket helps you detach so you can eventually move on. It’s a painless way to edit your wardrobe and create a fabulously uncluttered closet.

If you're short on space or want a fully self-contained closet, consider using a built-in laundry hamper as a breakup basket. Closets of Tulsa has so many awesome hamper options, from single, double and triple hampers with soft close hardware to pullout wire baskets.

Here’s one of our hardworking hampers in action:

Tip 2: Store Winter Clothes Outside Your Shopping Zone

As you clear the way for spring and summer, lighten your load by relocating clothes, shoes and accessories you won't be wearing. Storing winter clothes is an easy step that makes a HUGE impact on your closet organization! Check out my post on how to store off-season clothing, and don’t forget the essential prep step:

Take action while you still remember what worked and what didn’t. Which outfits made you feel fantastic? What faded, stretched out or just didn’t fit? Only store clothes that have earned their place.

If space permits, use storage boxes on garage shelving to store off-season clothes. If your garage is overflowing, we can help with that, too! Call Closets of Tulsa today for your FREE consultation and 3-D closet and garage design: 918.609.0214

Tip 3: Sweat the Small Stuff—Organize Ties, Jewelry, Underwear...

... socks, T-shirts, handbags, pajamas, belts—you get the idea! The smallest parts of your wardrobe are often the most neglected. My post on cleaning out small accessories will help you declutter your closet and keep only what you really use. You'll feel lighter without all the excess, and you'll have easier access to the things you enjoy most.

Tip 4: Uncollecting is the New Collecting (Donate, Sell and Re-Home Your Stuff!)

Spring cleaning is prime time to let go of unneeded gifts, bad purchases and other excess. See my guide to uncollecting to make sense of why you buy stuff and why you keep it past its useful life. You’ll also learn my favorite ways to donate, sell and re-home your belongings.

A Month of Jane: Storage Tips from My Closet

My Closet is a Work in Progress

June is quickly approaching, but I'm in no hurry. Here on the Closet Blog, I'm declaring a month of JANE—a series of storage tips from my own closet!

I love experimenting with new products and ideas, so my closet system is always a work in progress. This series will show you the tools I'm currently using to stay organized, and how I share the space with my husband. (Teaser: His side of the closet looks completely different from mine, but not in ways you might expect!)

Storage Ideas for Off-Season Clothes

Recently, I swapped out my scarves and sandals to stage my shopping zone for summer.

During winter, I store my scarves in wire baskets at the bottom of my closet, and my sandals in a storage box high on a shelf. As the seasons change, I switch them so I can easily access what I’ll be wearing now. A closet system with built-in flexibility helps you maximize convenience and enjoyment in your closet all year.

I selected attractive storage boxes for this task, so I don't mind displaying them on my closet shelving and shoe rack.

Hangers for Slacks, Jeans and T-Shirts

I hang slacks, jeans and T-shirts next to my shoe rack. I use felt hangers for my pants and simple plastic hangers for my T-shirts. No clothes hanger can meet every storage need—here are the four types of hangers I use in my closet.

Shop Your Closet: Storing Off-Season Clothes

How Does it Feel to Shop Your Closet?

Visualize walking into your favorite boutique this time of year. The items on display are for the season ahead—not the weather that’s already come and gone. The space feels fresh, relevant and inspiring.

Your closet should bring you the same excitement and anticipation. You’ve invested a lot in your wardrobe; why not make it feel like a shopping trip every time you open the doors?

This walk in closet organizer creates a well-defined shopping zone.

Discover Your Closet’s Shopping Zone

A change in seasons is the perfect time to give your closet a mini-makeover. Relocating storage for clothes you're not wearing now reserves your line of sight—your shopping zone—for day-to-day use. The custom closet above has a well-defined shopping zone.

Sort Before You Store: Editing Off-Season Clothes

Before you store last season's wardrobe in full, do away with what no longer suits you! Why wash, dry clean and make space for items you won’t be thrilled to rediscover next season? Seize the moment while you still remember what worked and what didn’t. Which outfits made you feel fantastic? What faded, stretched out or just didn’t fit? Part with the latter so you’re only storing items that have earned their place.

Where to Store Off-Season Clothes

If space permits, neatly store off-season clothes on garage shelving or out of sight. (Here are some helpful tips on preparing clothes for storage, and why cardboard boxes belong in the recycling bin.) Choose a spot where the items fit comfortably.

If possible, leave the top of your closet shelving and the floor of your closet clear. Empty space gives your brain a break and directs your attention where it matters—your shopping zone!

If possible, simplify your space by leaving the top of your closet shelving and the floor of your closet clear.

If storing off-season clothes out of sight isn’t an option, try storage boxes and baskets on higher and lower closet shelves. Or, simply create a shopping zone by rotating off-season items to the periphery.

In small spaces with less flexibility, store off-season clothes in storage boxes and baskets on your closet shelves.

Wear More of What You Have

Relocating off-season items creates instant space in your closet. Defining your shopping zone in this way helps you see and regularly re-evaluate what you have. As a result, you’ll wear more of what you love (instead of buying more of it). Try it! You’ll notice yourself developing healthier habits around keeping and getting rid of things.
