The Perfect Hanger: A Fairy Tale

People often ask which style of clothes hanger I like best. As with all storage ideas, the answer is: It depends! Your closet organizer should be every bit as functional as it is stylish, and practical hangers are a must.

In my home, we use four types of clothes hangers for a few simple reasons.

In a custom closet or retail setting, wooden hangers make standout pieces look their best.

WOODEN HANGERS

Perfect for coat closets and guest closets! I love wooden hangers. They look great and hold up well to heavy clothes and long-term use.

Wooden hangers also help you avoid that awkward moment when your guests are leaving and you find their coats in a heap on the closet floor.

Wooden hangers are also an elegant, durable storage idea for retail—or any context where you've got a bit more hanging space to show off your treasures! Here's an excellent example from our custom closet installation for Beau&Arrow at The Boxyard

FELT HANGERS

My closet is full of these! Also known as velvet hangers or Huggable Hangers, these hangers keep clothing in place while saving space. They work for all kinds of clothes, from pants to silky blouses and spaghetti straps. They're also attractive and fairly inexpensive.

Storage tip: Look for felt hangers with contoured shoulders to keep sleeves in good shape.

Space-saving felt hangers come in many different colors.

Here's one way I use felt hangers in my own closet: Storage for jeans and slacks.

CHEAP PLASTIC HANGERS

Yes, I use these, too! I hang all my T-shirts on cheap plastic hangers. Why? Because they're easy to get on and off! I hang them damp, let them dry and yank one down when I'm working in the garage or garden. Here they are:

NO MORE WIRE HANGERS

Well, maybe in the movies. We've got these, too! I don’t use wire hangers, but my husband does. He just likes them, and sometimes that's reason enough for me. Because they're so slim, wire hangers also work well for his large collection of colorful golf shirts.

If you find a way to use one uniform style of hanger throughout your closet, well, that's impressive. Please let me know how you did it! Until then, choose hangers that do what you need, in colors you'll want to see.
