Storing Off-Season Pants

Now is the time to move off-season clothing out of your shopping zone. Because the stress of COVID-19 can make it harder to take on big projects, start with just your pants! If you get on a roll and take on your whole wardrobe, we won’t discourage you!

Before you store your off-season pants, take a moment while you still remember what worked and what didn’t. Which pants made you feel fantastic? Which pairs have faded or just don’t fit? Part with the latter so you’re only storing what you love. Place items you’re not sure about in your breakup basket.

PRO TIP: If you’re working the 30-Day Minimalism Game right now, use it to supercharge your pants editing!

Choose Pants Storage That Works for You

How you store this season’s pants depends on convenience and personal preference. Here are a couple options that are working in our own closets and in our clients’ homes.

Pants Drawers

Some clients with limited real estate want to reserve hanging space for other clothing. Some just prefer folded pants. If this is you, closet drawers are a great way to keep pants neatly organized. Storage support like closet drawer organizers can help with this. Here’s a beautiful example from our TAG Hardware line:

If you have the space and like to hang your pants, we can recommend a number of pants hangers—and will of course share our favorites! If you’re in the market for new hangers, enjoy 15% off and free shipping at Hangers.com when you use promo code TULSA.

Wooden Pants Hangers

Hangers.com has so many wooden options—choose from different colors and finishes, traditional style hangers, and pants hangers with clips. This client uses a classic notched wooden suit hanger to store his pants. We like the uniform look and the durability of these hangers.

Metal Pants Hangers

Clients often ask which clothes hangers I personally favor. As with many closet questions, the answer is: It depends! Practical hangers are essential—Here’s one I recommend often. I recently got these new metal pants hangers for my own closet, and I’m loving them. They stand up to the weight of heavy pants (no sagging) and have a ribbed, vinyl coated arm to hold pants in place. And they're the easiest-to-use pants hanger ever.

Plus, they go beyond space saving—this feels more like space stealing! A pants hanger doesn’t need extra space for a shirt collar or shoulder. This allows for a shorter drop than a typical clothes hanger, saving about 3 to 4 inches. Take a look at the vertical difference: One of the images below shows a pair of red pants on my metal pants hanger. The other shows the same pair on a felt clothes hanger with a lower drop.

A couple vertical inches might not seem like much, but in a closet, every bit counts. The difference could prevent your pants from brushing the floor and collecting dust, or just give some extra breathing room above the shelf below. Either way, details like these streamline the look and feel of your closet and bring more calm to your world.

Slide Out Pants Racks

Built-in pants racks are a more custom space stealing option we recommend to clients. Our pants racks slide out for convenience and come in several styles and finishes.
