Tip 1: Invest in a Breakup Basket

Dedicate one storage basket in your closet to clothes you don't quite love—and utilize it daily! Putting things in your breakup basket helps you detach so you can eventually move on. It’s a painless way to edit your wardrobe and create a fabulously uncluttered closet.

If you're short on space or want a fully self-contained closet, consider using a built-in laundry hamper as a breakup basket. Closets of Tulsa has so many awesome hamper options, from single, double and triple hampers with soft close hardware to pullout wire baskets.

Here’s one of our hardworking hampers in action:

Tip 2: Store Winter Clothes Outside Your Shopping Zone

As you clear the way for spring and summer, lighten your load by relocating clothes, shoes and accessories you won't be wearing. Storing winter clothes is an easy step that makes a HUGE impact on your closet organization! Check out my post on how to store off-season clothing, and don’t forget the essential prep step:

Take action while you still remember what worked and what didn’t. Which outfits made you feel fantastic? What faded, stretched out or just didn’t fit? Only store clothes that have earned their place.

If space permits, use storage boxes on garage shelving to store off-season clothes. If your garage is overflowing, we can help with that, too! Call Closets of Tulsa today for your FREE consultation and 3-D closet and garage design: 918.609.0214

Tip 3: Sweat the Small Stuff—Organize Ties, Jewelry, Underwear...

... socks, T-shirts, handbags, pajamas, belts—you get the idea! The smallest parts of your wardrobe are often the most neglected. My post on cleaning out small accessories will help you declutter your closet and keep only what you really use. You'll feel lighter without all the excess, and you'll have easier access to the things you enjoy most.

Tip 4: Uncollecting is the New Collecting (Donate, Sell and Re-Home Your Stuff!)

Spring cleaning is prime time to let go of unneeded gifts, bad purchases and other excess. See my guide to uncollecting to make sense of why you buy stuff and why you keep it past its useful life. You’ll also learn my favorite ways to donate, sell and re-home your belongings.

The Breakup Basket: Painlessly Edit Your Closet

The Breakup Basket is a Closet MUST

I keep a basket in my closet under my dresses. Every time I try something on that doesn't quite fit, isn't my color or even just bothers me, I throw it in the basket. At the end of the day, if something I wore made me frustrated or distracted or left me feeling less than my best, I throw it in the basket.

Shoes that hurt my feet, purses that swallowed my phone and keys—it feels fantastic to toss it all in the basket and walk away in my jammies.

A breakup basket is an essential tool for a well-edited closet. Call Closets of Tulsa today for your FREE consultation and 3-D closet design: 918.609.0214

I call this tool the breakup basket. Over time, I've found that I do not pull things back out of it. A breakup basket helps you temporarily disconnect from things you don't really need or want in your life. Eventually, you’re ready to move on.

Edit Your Closet with Less Effort

Clients get excited when I tell them about the breakup basket. They know they need to get rid of stuff, but it’s too easy to save closet cleaning for another day... and another... and another. The breakup basket takes no time at all!

A breakup basket should be just as stylish and functional as the rest of your custom closet. Select one you’ll love to see and use every day. Call Closets of Tulsa today for a FREE consultation and 3-D closet design: 918.609.0214

The breakup basket makes it easier to be more aggressive about getting rid of things, despite all our reasons for keeping them. Setting pieces aside without totally giving them away today gives you time to process. And removing them from your line of sight—your shopping zone—gives you space to untrain your emotional attachment to them.

Think twice before you put your items back on a hanger or shelf. Don't pay to dry clean what you won't be excited to get back—how many times have you done that?

If you're short on space or prefer a fully continuous closet design, a built-in laundry hamper makes a lovely breakup basket. Closets of Tulsa offers so many options, from single, double and triple hampers with soft-close drawer slides to pullout wire baskets.

A built-in laundry hamper, storage bench or wire basket system is a great alternative to keeping your breakup basket on the floor. Call Closets of Tulsa today to see what’s possible: 918.609.0214

Experiment with a breakup basket, and stick with it for a while. You’ll enjoy the instant gratification and calm of creating more space in your closet. Your wardrobe will shrink, but it will be painless.

Sweat the Small Stuff: Cutting the Clutter

If you've seasonally adjusted your wardrobe or done any uncollecting recently, you've probably turned a discriminating eye toward the primary pieces in your closet. But what about your small accessories?

Year after year of closet clean-outs, seemingly innocuous items like belts, ties, jewelry, undergarments, hats and handbags manage to escape the chopping block. Massive T-shirt collections are built—innocently enough—one run, tournament and merch purchase at a time. Often stacked/crammed/rolled; rarely enjoyed.

We tend not to get rid of these things—why?

Recently on the Closet Blog, we took a close look at (un)collecting: why we buy, why we keep things beyond their useful life, and why we hang onto unneeded gifts. Few items accumulate as easily as our small accessories! Instead of letting them go when we love them no more, we tend to stop seeing them. The result: Clutter!

Undergarments are uniquely suited for needless collecting because they're often the perfect storm of expensive to replace, unsuitable to re-home and rarely seen by the general public.

Here's the catch: Like everything else in your closet, these items only bring you enjoyment when they're in use or
edited and organized.

Custom closet storage helps you organize and declutter shoes, ties, jewelry, handbags and other accessories.

Purging your ratty/dated/neglected small accessories will make you feel lighter, possibly bring in some extra cash, and allow you to shop your closet in a whole new way.

For inspiration, here's another tip from the queen of serene, Marie Kondo, on how to fold and organize your underwear drawer.

Happy New Year!
